From gestalt theory to image analysis

This book aims to make the link between classical Gestalt theory and recent probabilistic formulations. It is written by authors from different mathematical traditions and addresses the needs of students and researchers who are looking to bridge the divide between classical and modern methods in image analysis. The author of the theory in this text was taught between 2002 and 2005 at the graduate schools of three European institutions. By providing both an introduction to the necessary background material required for the understanding of Gestalt theory and presenting its most relevant probabilistic formulations, the work aims to familiarize the reader with the main mathematical tools and concepts used in modern image analysis. This book contains necessary and well-illustrated classical theories and makes the updating to recent work and pointers to current research problems more accessible.
