This book is a much-revised version of a work that originally appeared in 1998. Twayne Publishers produced that book as part of a series entitled Studies in Intellectual and Cultural History (edited by Michael Roth). The earlier edition carried a different title and included only six chapters; the final two chapters of this book are therefore completely new. All other chapters, as well as the introduction and conclusion, have been significantly revised and updated.

ANIMATED LANDS Studies in Territoriology

If territory has been recurrently mobilized by political rhetoric, the sci-ence of territory itself has long been soaked in a reductionist and polarizedworldview we must be aware of too. To overcome what we believe are the distortions and limitations inherent in classical territoriology, we refi ne our understanding of how we might think about territorial existence and experience in a more pluralist and open- ended way.

Материал по курсу в полном объеме представляет собой многотомные энциклопедии, прочитать которые за 1-2 семестра физически невозможно. По первым трем разделам характеристики стран — природа, история, население и культура, содержащим неизменяемую информацию, можно пользоваться справочниками и энциклопедиями любого года издания. Из них наиболее доступны, имеются в каждой библиотеке бывшего СССР —Большая Советская Энциклопедия (3-е изд., 1969-78, 30 томов) и Советский энциклопедический словарь (Москва, 1982).

The History of the World

The fi rst edition of this book appeared in 1976 , and this is the fi fth. There have also been several translations, whose texts have sometimes had to vary slightly from the English originals at the request of their publishers. I think that it is unlikely that I shall now have time to offer the public yet another version. Since, though, this contains a very substantial revision of the text after a comprehensive reconsideration it may be helpful to set out once more in a new preface some explanation of what I have tried to do, any why it seemed sensible to do it. At the very least, I feel I should indicate whether the events of over twenty-five years have led me to change the purposes and perspectives with which I set out to break the ground for this book in the late 1960 s.
